The name “Setherwood” comes from a west coast grain which is a beautiful golden colour. Originally the kennel was started by June and Norm MacLeod. June started with her first Golden Retriever in 1960. Her first dog was a male named "Reid's Goldrange Blonde Bomber" who did well in the show and obedience rings. His stud fees helped to pay for her years at University. After graduation June and Norm welcomed many more Goldens Retrievers (and four children) into their home.
As breeders of Golden Retrievers in Ontario under this kennel name since 1967 and with registered puppies under this name since 1972, in 2021 June and Norm MacLeod decided it was time to pass the reins to their daughter Holly MacLeod. Together with her husband and two children they are now carrying on the lines and legacy of Setherwood Golden Retrievers. Holly was born into a house of Golden Retrievers and has over 40 years of experience in her own right. Norm and June continue to be involved in the breeding, selection and in sharing years of wisdom as Setherwood now carries on as second generation family passion, and with an ongoing legacy of beautiful, healthy, Golden Retrievers.
For over 50 years Setherwood has kept clear focus on always breeding with the foremost goal of healthy, loving temperament Golden Retrievers that conform to the breed standard.
All pups are CKC registered, and always bred from stock with certified clearances for hips. We also test every parent's elbows, eyes and heart. All pups are vet checked and receive shots prior to heading to their new homes.
My mother June MacLeod started Setherwood Goldens in the 70s so I've been involved with the dogs my whole life. After 50 years, the time came that my parents decided to retire. Their program was so incredible; we couldn't stand to see it go. The dogs are bred to be wonderful companions but also to meet the standards for the breed and all health clearances. The support my parents set up for new pup owners is unparalleled... Weekly visiting hours allowed for involvement with the pups' development and a chance to get to know their personalities. A new puppy seminar just before pups went home helped everyone gain knowledge to quickly integrate the pup into the family. The one-year litter reunion always turned into a fun dog party. This is the standard we strive to maintain.
My family and I absolutely love the dogs and are excited to carry on as the second generation for Setherwood with full support of my parents. We don't take deposits, just names and if you prefer a male or female. We would need to meet with you (and preferably anyone else who would be living with the dog) prior to confirming your spot on the list - just to ensure our dogs will be a good fit for your family. If you're interested, we would arrange for a visit and also a chance for you to meet some of the dogs.
Thank you for your interest in Setherwood Golden Retrievers,
Sincerely,
Holly MacLeod
